    2025-26 MVMS Course Placement Process

    Newly Registered Students

We are excited to welcome you to Mill Valley Middle School! Please note that your registration documentation, including residency and immunization records, must be completed and verified in order to attend orientation sessions and receive a schedule. We appreciate your support in working with the district registrar to complete the registration process!

    Incoming 6th Graders

Our WEB Day (Where Everybody Belongs)  orientation will take place for incoming 6th grade students on Friday, August 15th, from 9:00 a.m.-12 p.m. This is a student-only event where 6th grade students will meet their WEB leaders, participate in welcoming activities, answer their questions, review their schedules, and show them where to find their classes. A pizza lunch will be provided from 12-12:30.

Parent Orientation Meeting for 6th Grade Parents Only

Wednesday, August 20th, from 8:30–9:30 a.m., will be a parent orientation (all 6th grade parents are invited). This is an opportunity for you to meet our administrators, 6th grade teachers, and support staff. It will be followed by a PTSA coffee where you can discover the many ways parents can volunteer and help our PTSA and the important work it does to support student programs at MVMS.

Elective Selection Process for All Students

Please select your student’s elective preferences on the MVMS Elective Selection Form. You can find the course descriptions here: Elective Course Descriptions. If your student is going into 6th grade, please select their top two choices. If your student is going into 7th or 8th grade, please select their top four choices.

    Math Placement for All Students

The goal of the math placement process at Mill Valley Middle School is to ensure that students are best placed to grow and succeed in the next several years in school. The math placement options are:

    ● Math 6

    ● Math 7

    ● Math 7/8

    ● Math 8

    ● Algebra

Math placement for new students is determined by a combination of math grades, standardized test scores (if available), teacher recommendations, and the results of the MVMS math placement test.

All students new to the District will need to take a math placement test prior to the start of the school year. The three date options for the math placement test are:

    • Monday, June 16th at 10-11 a.m. (for all grades)
    • Friday, August 15th at 10:30-11:30 a.m. (for 7th and 8th grade only - orientation and tour of the school to follow)
    • Tuesday, August 19th at 1-2 p.m. (for 6th grade only)

The test will take place at the middle school.  Please come to the middle school front office, and we will direct you from there. Students only need to bring a pencil to the test, which takes no longer than one hour to complete.

Please RSVP to Kristine Thompson at mvmsregistrar@mvschools.org or leave her a message at 415-389-7711 x2811.

For Students who are English Learners only

Our Middle School ELD Specialist, Rachel Hudson, will contact you to schedule a brief English Language  Proficiency screening for your child. If you have questions about this language screening, feel free to contact Ms. Hudson at rhudson@mvschools.org

For any other questions about MVMS, please contact:

    • We will have a new 6th grade counselor in August. In the meantime, please feel free to email Erin or Janet below if you have questions!

  • This form is for Mill Valley Middle School students looking to confidentially (but not anonymously) report something unsafe. We want to encourage all of our students to get into the practice of reporting unsafe behavior because everyone has the right to feel safe, to be treated respectfully, and to thrive at MVMS. We take this form seriously, and we hope you do too.
